Simultaneous biogas upgrading and single cell protein production using hydrogen oxidizing bacteria

CO2, a primary byproduct of anaerobic digestion, significantly reduces the calorific value of biogas, necessitating its enhancement through biogas upgrading to increase the CH4 content. The hydrogen oxidizing bacteria (HOB) Cupriavidus necator H16 demonstrates potential as a candidate for biological biogas upgrading due to its efficient CO2 capture and biosynthesis capabilities. Results indicated that in batch experiments, the concentration of CH4 could be elevated from 57.09 % to 98.46 % within 72 h by HOB, with a maximum CO2 assimilation efficiency of 27 mL/(L·h), meeting the requirements for biomethane. In bioreactor scale-up experiments, the CH4 concentration was increased to 94.22 % within 96 h. Beyond biogas upgrading, HOB also produces biomass usable as single cell protein (SCP), with its protein content varying between 43.75–70.83 % depending on the gas supply ratio. A total of 17 amino acids were identified, including eight essential amino acids. The Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) indicated that the essential amino acid content in the HOB-based protein was well-balanced, closely approximating the quality of fishmeal and pork. A techno-economic analysis revealed that the net revenue from the anaerobic digestion process could be enhanced by 48.49 % using HOB-based biogas upgrading. In contrast, biogas upgrading processes based on hydrogenotrophic methanogens (HM) resulted in a 57 % reduction in net revenue. This study establishes a carbon flow pathway from organic solid waste to biomethane and utilizable protein sources, facilitating sustainable nutrient recovery. This approach not only enhances economic benefits but also reduces carbon emissions associated with the anaerobic digestion process.

Impact of the environmental parameters on single cell protein production and composition by Cupriavidus necator

Due to the rapid increase in the world's population, many developing countries are facing malnutrition problems, including famine and food insecurity. Particularly, the deficiency of protein sources becomes a serious problem for human and animal nutrition. In this context, Single Cell Proteins, could be exploited as an alternative source of unconventional proteins. The aim of the study was to investigate SCP production and composition by Cupriavidus necator under various environmental conditions, temperature and pH values. A mono-factorial approach was implemented using batch bioreactor cultures under well-controlled conditions. Results were compared in terms of bacterial growth and SCP composition (proteins, nucleic acids, amino acids and elemental formula). Complementary analyses were performed by flow cytometry to study cell morphology, membrane permeability and the presence of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) production. Our data confirmed the ability of C. necator to produce high amount of proteins (69 %DW at 30 °C and pH7). The results showed that temperature and pH independently impact SCP production and composition. This impact was particularly observed at the highest temperature (40 °C) and also the lowest pH value (pH5) providing lower growth rates, cell elongation, changes in granularity and lower amounts of proteins (down to 44 %DW at pH5) and nucleic acids. These low percentages were related to the production of PHB production (up to 44 %DW at 40 °C) which is the first report of a PHB accumulation in C. necator under nutrient unlimited conditions.

A comprehensive report on valorization of waste to single cell protein: strategies, challenges, and future prospects.

The food insecurity due to a vertical increase in the global population urgently demands substantial advancements in the agricultural sector and to identify sustainable affordable sources of nutrition, particularly proteins. Single-cell protein (SCP) has been revealed as the dried biomass of microorganisms such as algae, yeast, and bacteria cultivated in a controlled environment. Production of SCP is a promising alternative to conventional protein sources like soy and meat, due to quicker production, minimal land requirement, and flexibility to various climatic conditions. In addition to protein production, it also contributes to waste management by converting it into food and feed for both human and animal consumption. This article provides an overview of SCP production, including its benefits, safety, acceptability, and cost, as well as limitations that constrains its maximum use. Furthermore, this review criticizes the downstream processing of SCP, encompassing cell wall disruption, removal of nucleic acid, harvesting of biomass, drying, packaging, storage, and transportation. The potential applications of SCP, such as in food and feed as well as in the production of bioplastics, emulsifiers, and as flavoring agents for baked food, soup, and salad, are also discussed.

Productivity, amino acid profile, and protein bioaccessibility in heterotrophic batch cultivation of Galdieria sulphuraria

The polyextremophilic Galdieria sulphuraria is emerging as a promising microalgal species for food applications. This work explores the potential of heterotrophically cultivated G. sulphuraria as a protein producer for human consumption. To this end, the performances of four G. sulphuraria strains grown under the same conditions were compared. Amino acid profiles varied among strains and growth phases, but all samples met FAO dietary requirements for adults. The specific growth rates were between 1.01 and 1.48 day−1. After glucose depletion, all strains showed an increase of 38–49 % in nitrogen content within 48 h, reaching 7.8–12.0 % w/w. An opposite trend was observed in protein bioaccessibility, which decreased on average from 69 % during the exponential phase to a minimum of 32 % 48 h after stationary phase, with significant differences among the strains. Therefore, selecting the appropriate strain and harvesting time is crucial for successful single-cell protein production.

Production of single cell protein by fungi from different food wastes

AbstractSingle-cell protein (SCP) which is derived from agricultural waste has recently drawn increased interest as a substitute source of protein to improve both human and animal nutrition. In this study, pineapple, orange, banana, sugarcane, and garlic wastes were prepared as substrates for SCP production using fungi under a liquid fermentation system. The fermentation conditions (temperature, pH, and nitrogen sources) of the most promising fungal isolates were optimized for maximum SCP production. Results obtained showed that Aspergillus niger with pineapple waste after 10 days gave the highest protein content (9.79 ± 0.11 g/L), followed by Penicillium citrinum with orange waste after 8 days (9.41 ± 0.15 g/L) and Penicillium crustosum with banana waste after 6 days (7.75 ± 0.11 g/L).The optimum fermentation temperature, pH value, and nitrogen source for SCP production were recorded at 30 °C, pH 4.3, and ammonium sulphate with Aspergillus niger; at 30 °C, pH 5.0, and ammonium sulphate with Penicillium citrinum; and at 20 °C, pH 5.0, and ammonium sulphate with Penicillium crustosum. Based on proximate analysis of SCP produced, fat content ranged from 2.74 ± 0.08∼10.73 ± 0.1%, fibers from 4.8 ± 0.18∼9.45 ± 0.15%, carbohydrates from 14.1 ± 0.06∼20.81 ± 0.06%, ash from 4.05 ± 0.05∼16.1 ± 0.2%, total phenols 0.14 ± 0.03∼0.64 ± 0.04%, and total flavonoids 0.09 ± 0.01∼0.55 ± 0.15%. The amino acid profile of SCP showed that all essential amino acids were present in significant amounts. This study recorded some fungal species as SCP producers for the first time and provided a significant amount of protein. Briefly, fungal SCP is a great protein source and other essential nutrients that may be used in food products. Graphical Abstract

Life cycle assessment of single cell protein production–A review of current technologies and emerging challenges

Population growth trend will have a significant impact on the availability of food resources, leading to a surge in the development of various protein concentrates, including Single Cell Protein (SCP), which is derived from the biomass of unicellular organisms. The objective of this review is to analyze the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on SCP production, assessing the influence of the technologies on environmental outcomes and the challenges linked to LCA methodological choices. The articles included in the review were classified according to their LCA goal, distinguishing between those focused on the production of SCP for consumption, for feed valorization, for wastewater treatment and for conventional foods substitution in meals. Generally, most systems comprised three stages: feedstock production and pre-treatment, fermentation, and post-treatment, and in some cases, integration of SCP into the final product. The analysis revealed that the type of substrate has a great influence on the environmental profile of the product, as well as its pre-treatment. Electricity was also identified as the main hotspot in virtually all systems, being the most studied parameter in sensitivity analyses. Regarding the definition of LCA parameters, a lack of consensus on the description of system boundaries in the use of organic waste as substrate for SCP production is notable, leading to confusion about the actual associated impacts. Likewise, the study of the environmental performance of SCP based on its amino acid content and nutritional quality is one of the main challenges that would contribute to better evaluating its environmental behavior compared to other types of protein of vegetal and animal origin.

Techno-Economic Analysis of Gas Fermentation for the Production of Single Cell Protein.

Despite the large carbon footprint of livestock production, animal protein consumption has grown over the past several decades, necessitating new approaches to sustainable animal protein production. In this techno-economic analysis, single cell protein (SCP) produced via gas fermentation of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and hydrogen is studied as an animal feed source to replace fishmeal or soybean meal. Using wind-powered water electrolysis to produce hydrogen and oxygen with carbon dioxide captured from corn ethanol, the minimum selling price (MSP) of SCP is determined to be $2070 per metric ton. An emissions comparison between SCP, fishmeal, and soybean meal shows that SCP has a carbon intensity as low as 0.73 kg CO2-equiv/kg protein, while fishmeal and soybean meal have an average carbon intensity of 2.72 kg CO2-equiv/kg protein and 0.85 kg CO2-equiv/kg protein, respectively. Moreover, SCP production would occupy 0.4% of the land per ton of protein produced compared to soybean meal and would disturb less than 0.1% of the marine ecosystem currently disturbed by fishmeal harvesting practices. These results show promise for the future economic viability of SCP as a protein source in animal feed and indicate significant environmental benefits compared to other animal feed protein sources.

CO2-based production of phytase from highly stable expression plasmids in Cupriavidus necator H16

BackgroundExisting plasmid systems offer a fundamental foundation for gene expression in Cupriavidus necator; however, their applicability is constrained by the limitations of conjugation. Low segregational stabilities and plasmid copy numbers, particularly in the absence of selection pressure, pose challenges. Phytases, recognized for their widespread application as supplements in animal feed to enhance phosphate availability, present an intriguing prospect for heterologous production in C. necator. The establishment of stable, high-copy number plasmid that can be electroporated would support the utilization of C. necator for the production of single-cell protein from CO2.ResultsIn this study, we introduce a novel class of expression plasmids specifically designed for electroporation. These plasmids contain partitioning systems to boost segregation stability, eliminating the need for selection pressure. As a proof of concept, we successfully produced Escherichia coli derived AppA phytase in C. necator H16 PHB− 4 using these improved plasmids. Expression was directed by seven distinct promoters, encompassing the constitutive j5 promoter, hydrogenase promoters, and those governing the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle. The phytase activities observed in recombinant C. necator H16 strains ranged from 2 to 50 U/mg of total protein, contingent upon the choice of promoter and the mode of cell cultivation - heterotrophic or autotrophic. Further, an upscaling experiment conducted in a 1 l fed-batch gas fermentation system resulted in the attainment of the theoretical biomass. Phytase activity reached levels of up to 22 U/ml.ConclusionThe new expression system presented in this study offers a highly efficient platform for protein production and a wide array of synthetic biology applications. It incorporates robust promoters that exhibit either constitutive activity or can be selectively activated when cells transition from heterotrophic to autotrophic growth. This versatility makes it a powerful tool for tailored gene expression. Moreover, the potential to generate active phytases within C. necator H16 holds promising implications for the valorization of CO2 in the feed industry.

New strategy for the biosynthesis of alternative feed protein: Single‐cell protein production from straw‐based biomass

AbstractWith rapid growth of global population, meeting the increasing demand for food has become a significant challenge. This challenge is further compounded by limited arable land and the necessity to address the nutritional needs of both humans and animals. However, the utilization of straw biomass, which is readily available as an agricultural by‐product, presents a sustainable solution to this problem. Microbial fermentation has emerged as a highly effective method for converting non‐food biomass into protein, particularly known as single‐cell protein (SCP). Compared to traditional protein sources, SCP production through microbial fermentation is rapid and efficient, and requires minimal land resources. This review provides a comprehensive review of the research advancements in SCP from agricultural biomass, including pretreatment methods, microbial strains, and fermentation processes involved in the bioconversion of straw biomass. Due to the complexity of straw‐based biomass (SBB), it is essential to customize industrial strains and optimize the fermentation process to achieve the highest protein yield and productivity. Additionally, improving the compatibility between tailored processes and cost‐effective industrial strains can lead to the production of protein substitutes that are not only highly nutritious but also economically viable. Hence, the application of SCP derived from SBB presents a dual solution by reducing the need for managing agricultural residues and providing a sustainable source of protein. However, the production of SCP from SBB also has some limitations, such as protein‐synthesis efficiency, production cost, and difficulty to scale‐up the production process. In the future, there is great potential for significant advancements in the targeted conversion of SBB into protein by customizing high‐performance microbial strains. Several sensor and machine learning technologies will predict and monitor real‐time dynamic changes in the fermentation process of SBB, offering an opportunity to improve the production of sustainable SCP in an environmentally friendly and precise manner.

Production of single cell protein from brewer’s spent grain through enzymatic saccharification and fermentation enhanced by ammoniation pretreatment

Brewer’s spent grain (BSG) is a major low-value by-product of beer industry. To realize the high value application of BSG, this work proposed a strategy to produce single cell protein (SCP) with oligosaccharide prebiotics from BSG, via ammoniation pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation. The optimum conditions of ammoniation pretreatment obtained by response surface method were 11 % ammonia dosage (w/w), 63 °C for 26 h. Suitable enzyme and yeast were screened to enhance the conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose in BSG into sugars and maximize the SCP yield. It was shown that using lignocellulolytic enzyme SP from Penicillium oxalicum and Trichosporon cutaneum, about 310 g of SCP with 80 g of arabinoxylo-oligosaccharides were obtained from 1000 g of BSG. This process is low cost, high efficiency, and easy to implement, which has good industrial application prospects.

Designing sustainable circular bioeconomy solutions for the pulse industry: The case of crude pea starch as a substrate for single cell protein production

Valorization of crude pea starch has become a key focus in the pea industry's sustainability pursuit. This study aimed to explore the circularity potential of crude pea starch as a nutrient-dense substrate for the solid-state cultivation of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) Single Cell Protein (SCP). Following the ISO 2006:14040/44 standard, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to ascertain the environmental performance and operational dynamics of baseline and scenario pea starch-based yeast SCP process designs and identify optimal design considerations. Results demonstrated a higher relative contribution to the toxicity categories, with a relatively less contribution to global warming and land use. The distribution and media enrichment processes were identified as the hotspots, contributing about 32–55 % and 40–56 % to global warming and land use, respectively. Generally, train and air freight were more sustainable than lorry freight, respective of mileage and mass. Regarding system alteration, eliminating the media enrichment process could offset about 26 % of land footprint, with a similar trend for most impact categories. Process benchmarking showed up to a 3-fold reduction in global warming impacts relative to soybean meal, and about 71 % offset relative to fishmeal. Consequential LCA showed a general sustainability preference for substituting the aquacultural feeds with pea starch-based SCP, with a stronger emphasis on fishmeal substitution. Overall, these findings highlight the potential of the proposed SCP design as a sustainable upcycling solution with substitutionary potentials for conventional food and feeds, recommending further exploration in value and wealth creation.

Microalgae cultivation: from CO2 fixation to single-cell protein production

Bio-sequestration of CO2 using microalgae to recycle CO2 into valuable products such as single-cell proteins (SCP) is one of the most promising fields nowadays. Microalgae are able to use CO2 as their carbon source and subsequently build carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. Nevertheless, all microalgae strains do not have the same CO2 tolerance and culture conditions. Moreover, pure CO2 is less soluble in water, which leads to a low carbon capture and fixation rate. Thus, to optimise SCP production in relation to CO2 mitigation, studies of the enhancement of solubilization of CO2 in water as well as the determination of the optimum process parameter for CO2 fixation and SCP production need to be done. Consequently, this study aims to review the cultivation conditions for single-cell protein production.

Efficient production of single cell protein from biogas slurry using screened alkali-salt-tolerant Debaryomyces hansenii

Production of single cell protein (SCP) by recovering ammonia nitrogen from biogas slurry shows great potential against protein scarcity and unsustainable production of plant and animal proteins. Herein, a high-alkali-salt-tolerant yeast strain, Debaryomyces hansenii JL8-0, was isolated and demonstrated for high-efficient SCP production. This strain grew optimally at pH 8.50 and 2500 mg/L NH4+-N, and it could efficiently utilize acetate as the additional carbon source. Under optimal conditions, SCP biomass of 32.21 g/L and productivity of 0.32 g/L·h−1 were obtained in fed-batch fermentation. Remarkably, nearly complete (97.40 %) ammonia nitrogen from biogas slurry was recovered, probably due to its high affinity for NH4+-N. Altogether, this strain showed advantages in terms of cell biomass titer, productivity, and yield. A cultivation strategy was proposed by co-culturing D. hansenii with other compatible yeast strains to achieve high-efficient SCP production from biogas slurry, which could be a promising alternative technology for biogas slurry treatment.

Valorization of spent coffee grounds through integrated bioprocess of fermentable sugars, volatile fatty acids, yeast-based single-cell protein and biofuels production

Recovering nutrients from waste for biological processes aligns with sustainability principles. This study aimed to convert spent coffee grounds (SCG) into valuable products, including fermentable sugars, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), yeast-based single-cell protein and biofuels. Alkaline pretreatment was conducted before enzymatic hydrolysis, in which the pretreated SCG was hydrolyzed with varying enzyme loadings (20–60 filter paper units (FPU)/g-solid) and solid loadings (3–15 % w/v). The hydrolyzed slurry was utilized for VFAs and hydrogen production, yielding high values of 0.66 g/g-volatile solids (VS) and 109 mL/g-VS, respectively, using an enzyme loading of 50 FPU/g-solid and a solid loading of 3 % (w/v). The derived VFAs were used to cultivate a newly isolated yeast, Candida maltosa KKU-ARY2, resulting in an accumulated protein content of 43.7 % and a biomass concentration of 4.6 g/L. This study highlights the conversion of SCG into essential components, emphasizing the benefits of waste utilization through cascade bioprocesses.

Production of single cell protein rich in potassium by Nectaromyces rattus using biogas slurry and molasses

Single-cell protein (SCP) is a vital supplement for animal protein feed. This study utilized biogas slurry and sugarcane molasses to ferment Nectaromyces rattus for the production of SCP. The optimal batch fermentation conditions were obtained in a 5L jar with a tank pressure of 0.1 MPa, an initial speed of 300 rpm, and an inoculum volume of 30%. The highest cell dry weight concentrations of the fed-batch fermentation without reflux and the fed-batch fermentation with reflux were 46.33 g/L and 29.71 g/L, respectively. The nitrogen conversion rates (47.05% and 44.12%) and the cell yields of total organic carbon (1 g/g and 1.17 g/g) of both fermentation modes were compared. The SCP contained 42.32% amino acids. Its high concentrations of potassium (19859.96 mg/kg) and phosphorus (7310.44 mg/kg) present a novel approach for the extraction of these essential nutrients from biogas slurry. The enrichment of K was related to the H+ efflux and sugar transport.

Deciphering cell wall sensors enabling the construction of robust P. pastoris for single-cell protein production

Single-cell protein (SCP) production in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris has the potential to achieve a sustainable protein supply. However, improving the methanol fermentation efficiency and reducing carbon loss has been a long-standing challenge with far-reaching scientific and practical implications. Here, comparative transcriptomics revealed that PAS_0305, a gene directly associated with cell wall thickness under methanol stress, can be used as a target for unlocking cell wall sensors. Intracellular trehalose accumulation confirmed that cell wall sensors were activated after knocking out PAS_0305, which resulted in increased cell wall permeability. Genome-wide signal perturbations were transduced through the HOG module and the CWI pathway, which was confirmed to connected by Pbs2-Mkk. As a consequence of CWI pathway activation, ΔPAS_0305 elicited a rescue response of cell wall remodeling by increasing the β-1,3-glucan content and decreasing the chitin/mannose content. Remarkably, perturbations in global stress signals led to a fine-tuning of the metabolic network of ΔPAS_0305, resulting in a superior phenotype with highest crude protein and methanol conversion rate of 67.21% and 0.46 gDCW/g. Further genome-scale metabolic models were constructed to validate the experimental results, confirming that unlocking cell wall sensors resulted in maximized flux from methanol towards SCP and effectively addressing the issue of carbon loss in methanol fermentation. This work sheds new light on the potential of manipulating cellular signaling pathways to optimize metabolic networks and achieve exceptional phenotypic characteristics, providing new strategies for constructing versatile cell factories in P. pastoris.

Microbial electrosynthesis of single cell protein and methane by coupling fast-growing Methanococcus maripaludis with microbial electrolysis cells

Single cell protein (SCP) is a promising alternative protein source, as its production bypasses the disadvantages of animal protein production in industrial agriculture. Coupling a fast-growing hydrogen consuming organism with microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) could be a viable method for SCP production. In this study, a fast-growing and protein-rich methanogen, Methanococcus maripaludis was selected as the primary SCP source. The inoculation of M. maripaludis in MECs triggered cell synthesis with methane production. The doubling time measured was 11.2 h and the specific growth rate was 0.062 1/h. The highest SCP production rate was 13.7 mg/L/h. In the dried biomass, the weight of protein was over 60 %. Amino acid profiling of the harvested biomass demonstrated high abundance of essential amino acids. The electron flux analysis indicated that 31.3 % electrons in the electrochemical systems were directed into SCP synthesis. These results illustrated the potential for SCP production by coupling a fast-growing methanogen with MECs.

Effect of different types of bacterial single cell protein on feed intake, digestibility, growth and body composition of Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei)

This study assessed the potential of four bacterial (Methylococcus capsulatus) single cell protein (SCP) products as alternative protein sources for Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) diets. A growth trial and a digestibility trial were undertaken, during which the bacterial SCP products were compared with a high-quality fishmeal and a soy protein concentrate, regarding their impact on ingredient digestibility, growth, feed intake and whole-body composition of juvenile P. vannamei. Seven diets were formulated; one reference diet (REF) and six test diets. The test diets consisted of 85% of the REF diet and 15% of a test ingredient. Ingredients tested were four bacterial SCP products (SCP1–4), which differed in processing conditions, fishmeal (FM) and soy protein concentrate (SoyProt). Growth and feed utilization were similar for P. vannamei fed either the FM diet or one of the bacterial SCP diets, whilst lowest growth and feed utilization were observed for shrimp fed the SoyProt diet. Final whole-body protein content did not differ between shrimp fed the FM diet or one of the four bacterial SCP diets. However, shrimp fed the SCP diets had a significantly higher final phosphorus body content and a higher phosphorus retention than shrimp fed the FM or SoyProt diets. This indicates a higher phosphorus availability in the bacterial SCP products compared to FM and SoyProt. Protein digestibility of the SCP products was similar to FM, whilst amino acid (AA) digestibility was comparable to FM for three of the four SCP products (SCP1, SCP2 and SCP4). The SCP3 product showed the lowest digestibility for most AA, indicating a possible influence of processing conditions on AA availability of bacterial SCPs. Overall, this study highlights that bacterial SCP originating from M. capsulatus is a viable alternative protein source for Pacific white shrimp diets, but processing conditions should be taken into account.

Potential of enriched phototrophic purple bacteria for H2 bioconversion into single cell protein

Single cell protein (SCP) has emerged as an alternative protein source, potentially based on the recovery of carbon and nutrients from waste-derived resources as part of the circular economy. From those resources, gaseous substrates have the advantage of an easy sterilization, allowing the production of pathogen-free SCP. Sterile gaseous substrates allow producing pathogen-free SCP. This study evaluated the use of an enriched phototrophic purple bacteria (PPB) consortium for SCP production using H2 and CO2 as electron and C sources. The influence of pH (6.0–8.5), temperature (15–50 °C) and light intensity (0–50 W·m−2) on the growth kinetics and biomass yields was investigated using batch tests. Optimal conditions were found at pH 7, 25 °C and light intensities over 30 W·m−2. High biomass and protein yields were achieved (~ 1 g CODbiomass·g CODH2consumed−1 and 3.9–4.4 g protein·g H2−1) regardless of the environmental conditions, being amongst the highest values reported from gaseous streams. These high yields were obtained thanks to the use of light as a sole energy source by the PPB consortium, allowing a total utilization of H2 for growth. Hydrogen uptake rates varied considerably, with values up to 61 ± 5 mg COD·d−1 for the overall H2 consumption rates and 2.00 ± 0.14 g COD·g COD−1·d−1 for the maximum specific uptake rates under optimal growth conditions. The latter value was estimated using a mechanistic model able to represent PPB growth on H2. The biomass exhibited high protein contents (>50 % w/w) and adequate amino acid profiles, showing its suitability as SCP for feed. PPB were the dominant bacteria during the experiments (relative abundance over 80 % in most tests), with a stable population dominated by Rhodobacter sp. and Rhodopseudomonas sp. This study demonstrates the potential of enriched PPB cultures for H2 bioconversion into SCP.
